The Story Behind the Name:
Have you ever heard of Bear 399? She’s one of the most iconic grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, especially around Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. In 2020, during a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, we had the unforgettable experience of seeing her up close as she crossed the road right in front of us—leading her four new cubs. It was magical.
Bear 399 is a remarkable mother. Over the years, she’s raised her cubs near roads, instinctively knowing that predators avoid these areas, giving her young a better chance at survival. Incredibly, at age 27, she became the oldest known grizzly in the region to give birth, ultimately raising at least 18 cubs in her lifetime.
That moment of watching her with her cubs stayed with me. It inspired the creation of Four Bears Design—a reflection of my passion for creating meaningful spaces for my own family: me, my husband, and our four daughters—my own “four bears.” The connection I felt with Bear 399 and her fierce, nurturing spirit continues to influence everything I create.
